Virginia West Martin passed away peacefully with her husband of 63 years at her bedside on March 20, 2010. She was born Sept. 26, 1921, in Shelbyville, IL, the daughter of W.R. and Hazel West. Virginia earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1943 and worked as an analytical chemist at the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, Wisconsin, where she met her beloved husband George and they married on Dec. 21, 1946. Virginia and George lived in 5 states while they raised their family and George pursued his career. They retired in 1989 to make Boerne, TX, their home for the past 21 years. She is survived by her devoted husband, Dr. George Martin; her sister Kathryn Rooke; their 3 children, Carolyn Keith and her husband, Gerry of Evanston, IL, Dr. Keith Martin and his wife, Alison of Eau Claire, WI, and Joanne Walden and her husband, Charlie of Coppell, TX; 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Over their lifetime together, Virginia and George enjoyed square dancing and windjammer sailing for 26 years. She was active in the Boerne First United Methodist Church Women’s Ministry and Genesis Sunday School Class, and was a Stephen Minister for over 10 years as well as a volunteer at the Boerne Library. Both she and George served as part of the Kairos Prison Ministry in Hondo and Huntsville for 14 years. The Memorial Service will be on Thursday, March 25, at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Boerne with Pastors Conrad Archer and Fred Martin officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to either Vitas Hospice Charitable Fund, 5430 Fredericksburg Rd.
